Activities

SBMC is a platform for the cooperative development of swappable battery systems for light electric vehicles.

In a first phase the Consortium will work on the definition of common technical specifications of the battery system.
The activity is not limited only to a theoretical definition but will address a test phase and the development of prototypes of batteries and charging stations. This exercise will therefore include field tests carried out with the involvement of battery manufacturers, energy providers and local authorities (i.e. cities and urban governments). The aim of that effort is to verify the efficiency of the specifications and the performance of prototypes, especially from a user perspective.

For more information about the technical scope, visit our Scope page.

While the common technical specifications and the prototypes will be finalized, the Consortium will promote them within European and International standardization bodies. The final goal is indeed to adopt a de facto standard that can be diffused worldwide. SBMC is adopting a collaborative approach toward government entities and society, ensuring a dialogue between all parties involved to establish the best possible electrification pathway for the industry.

Types of membership within SBMC

Paramount for all members of SBMC is the active contribution to the common project by supporting the various activities of the consortium depending on membership level. All external parties start as Regular Member or Associate Member subject to compliance with the membership criteria, conditions and obligations.
Membership requires a commitment  of human resources , as well as an annual financial contribution, related to membership type.
Core Members
  • Provide a contribution in the Steering Committee, the Policy Committee, Technical Committee and the respective Working Groups
  • Are an OEM (or an affiliate of an OEM), producing L-category vehicles, or a battery manufacturer, or an energy provider.
Regular Members
  • Provide a contribution in the Policy Committee or Technical Committee and at least 2 Working Groups
  • Are an OEM (or an Affiliate of an OEM), producing L-category vehicles, or a battery manufacturer, or an energy provider (road-side loading), or any other stakeholder able to provide effective contribution to the Project (in terms of expertise and resources).
Associate Members
  • Provide a contribution in at least 2 Working Groups
  • Are a Governmental organization, Research organization, Academic organization, or any other organization able to provide effective contribution to the Project (in terms of expertise and resources).

Organizational structure and Bodies within SBMC

To achieve the goals of SBMC, an organization structure as described below is laid out.
Steering Committee
The Consortium and the Project will be fully managed by the Steering Committee, ensuring that the Consortium’s vision and goals are achieved within the agreed Project Plan.
The main tasks of the Steering Committee are approving the Consortium’s goals, strategy and monitoring the progress and deliverables of the Consortium, which shall be reported regularly by the Policy Committee and the Technical Committee.
Policy Committee
Responsible for the execution of policies approved by the Steering Committee and advising the Steering Committee on strategic executive decision-making topics in relation to the overall management of the Project.
Also responsible for the coordination of its internal Working Groups, being:
  • Working Group Standardization bodies
  • Working Group Policies/Strategy advisors
  • PR & Marketing
Technical Committee
Responsible for the determination and execution of all the technical aspects of the Project and the coordination between its internal Working Groups, being:
  • Working Group Battery Specification
  • Working Group Vehicle Interface
  • Working Group External Interface
  • Working Group Pilots, Prototypes & Testing

Words from our founding partners

As expressed when the consortium agreement was signed

Yoshishige Nomura, Honda Motor:

"Honda believes that the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles can play an important part in realising a more sustainable society. For that purpose, we need to solve several challenges such as extending the range, shortening the charging time and lowering the vehicle and infrastructure costs to enhance convenience for customers. In the Consortium we have created, the founding members from the motorcycle industry and other stakeholders will work together towards standardizing swappable batteries, their charging systems and surrounding infrastructure to create the environment for their use.
Our final goal is to ensure that motorcycles will continue to be chosen as a useful method of transportation in future mobility."

Stefan Pierer,  PIERER Mobility:

“The signing of this Consortium agreement is a key step in ensuring that PIERER Mobility AG, can continue to move forward, deliver innovation at pace, and advance its clear strategic vision for electric powered twowheelers.
Together with our partners, we will work to deliver a swappable battery system for lowvoltage vehicles (48V) up to 11kW capacity, based on international technical standards. We very much look forward to ensuring that powered two wheeler vehicles maintain their role in the future of both urban and nonurban mobility."

Michele Colaninno, Piaggio Group:

“Urban mobility is going through a delicate moment of transition towards electrification. Thanks to our Consortium, representing four major global players, motorbikes will continue to play a key role in the urban context. Swappable batteries give the right answer to speed up the recharging time of vehicles offering an additional valuable choice for users. Takuya Kinoshita, Yamaha Motor:

“The Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium in Europe is finally ready to get to work. I hope that this first step forward will be a beacon that draws like-minded parties to our mission and leads to transformative changes for the future. We at Yamaha Motor are confident that through this initiative, we can help unify the differing technical specs and standards and contribute to maximizing the merits of electric power for customers around the world.”
